IBM believes that city planning and design should have the citizens in mind. IBM’s “People For Smarter Cities” ads double as benches, ramps and shelter from the rain. The project aims to encourage ‘smarter thinking’ when it comes to coming up with solutions for the city. The ads also encourage people to share their ideas on how they can improve their neighborhood.

Above, you can see how the cover of The Travel Issue was taken from rough sketch to finished product, executed wonderfully by photographer/artist/great dude Christopher Boffoli.

1. I was sketching out ideas for the cover and, when they were all coming out bad, I started to stress-eat some Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I thought I’d Instagram a picture of a little toy duck I had floating in the cereal. Then I started to think that a concept like that might work for the cover, somehow. But probably not cereal—maybe curry or soup. And probably not a duck.

2. My editors all said, “No, you dingus, of course it’s got to be cereal. Who are you kidding? You know nothing, you absolute moron.” HARSH, but TRUE. With a more fleshed-out sketch in hand, I contacted Mr. Boffoli (who happens to specialize in delightful food photographs that incorporate miniature figures). Luckily, he had the time/interest to work on the cover in our tight time frame.

3. Christopher knocked it out of the park on the first round, using some special edition Lucky Charms (featuring Nemo!) and what I’m assuming was a lot of milk.

4. We moved a thing or two around, added some words, and VOILA. It ended up being our least stressful cover process yet, and my favorite cover so far. Thanks Christopher!

“Roberta Smith: I went to school before theory became fashionable. I tried to catch up a little, but I really didn’t have much use for it. It’s too narrow and it’s written in a specialized language that seldom explains what art does visually. The way artworks communicate to the eye and the brain. Theory might explain the context and the context is interesting, but only up to a point. On the other hand I know there’s a trickle-down effect; I can’t reject it totally because it’s in the air, and it’s also in a lot of art. To make a different point: I don’t think criticism is an academic discipline; it comes out of yourself. Some people can absorb all kinds of stuff and make it their own. Others are hobbled by it. Either way you have to find your own voice and you have to work mainly from your own reactions. I guess there’s academic criticism with footnotes and all, but that seems written in a private language for a specialized audience. It’s not useful to most people.”
